Woman on Wall
Infatuated with floral themes and designs, photographer Jane Stevens has been able to juxtapose a traditional looking pattern of roses with a head bust of an elegant and regal looking woman. The lighting of this photograph, entitled Woman on Wall, is one of the first things that stand out- the brightness and contrast give the piece a more contemporary look despite its aged subject matter (think Jeurgen Teller). In addition, the dark shadows accentuate the slightly faded colors of the overall piece. The very basic idea of photography is how light interacts with photosensitive surfaces. Thus, lighting is everything in photography, and we as viewers often underestimate its power. Even though the composition reflects the interior of a Victorian era home, the way it was photographed gives it an entirely new meaning.
